Should first-timers visit Sydney, Melbourne and Queensland in one trip?

Yes, if you have at least fourteen full nights and choose one part of Queensland. Spend four nights in Sydney, three in Melbourne and six in Queensland. For a more relaxed trip, choose Sydney and Queensland or Sydney and Melbourne instead.

Full answer

Sydney, Melbourne and Queensland can fit into one trip.

The route is reasonable only when “Queensland” means one clear area, not Brisbane, the Whitsundays, Cairns and the reef together.

A workable plan

  • four nights in Sydney;
  • three nights in Melbourne;
  • six nights in Cairns and Port Douglas, the Whitsundays, or another single Queensland area;
  • one day around the flights.

Fly between each stop. Driving between Sydney and Melbourne or north through Queensland would use too much of a two-week trip.

What each stop adds

Sydney provides the harbour, coastal walks and the city’s most recognisable views. Four nights allow for the centre, a beach or coastal walk, and a day in the Blue Mountains or another part of the city.

Melbourne provides food, galleries, neighbourhoods and a different city atmosphere. Three nights is enough for a first visit, but not for a full Great Ocean Road trip as well. Add one or two nights if the road is a priority.

Queensland provides the biggest change. Choose Cairns or Port Douglas for reef and rainforest. Choose the Whitsundays for islands and sailing. Choose Brisbane and a nearby coast for easier family travel and beaches, but not for the same reef experience.

When all three make sense

Include all three when:

  • this may be the only Australia trip for a long time;
  • you have at least fourteen full nights on the ground;
  • domestic flights do not bother you;
  • one part of Queensland is a major priority;
  • you are comfortable with a quicker city stay.

When to choose two instead

Choose Sydney and Queensland when reef, rainforest or tropical beach matters more than a second city.

Choose Sydney and Melbourne when food, culture and urban neighbourhoods matter more than a resort or reef stay.

Choose Melbourne and Queensland when flight routes or international arrival make that easier, though most first visitors will still want Sydney.

Families with young children will usually enjoy two regions more. Every flight involves packing, airport travel and another hotel check-in.

The main mistake

Do not treat Queensland as one stop on the map.

Cairns to Airlie Beach is a long journey. Brisbane to Cairns is a flight. The Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Whitsundays and Daintree create different holidays.

Choose the Queensland experience first, then decide whether Sydney and Melbourne both still fit.
