Is Chengdu worth adding to a China itinerary?
Yes, Chengdu can be one of the most rewarding China bases, especially for food, teahouse pace, pandas and Sichuan side trips. It needs time; as a rushed panda errand, it loses most of its point.
Answer
Chengdu changes the trip’s temperature. It is still a big city, but the draw is slower: food that carries whole days, teahouses, parks, neighbourhood eating and access to Sichuan landscapes. Pandas are part of the appeal, not the entire argument. Add Chengdu if Sichuan food, a gentler city rhythm or a scenic side trip such as Jiuzhaigou is a real priority. If the route only allows one hurried day, it may be better saved for a trip where western China has more space.
