How should travellers choose regional bases in France?

Coastal landscape with water and shoreline in France.

In France, a good base is not just pretty; it has the right transport, food, day-trip radius and evening feel. Choose Nice, Avignon, Bayeux, Tours, Strasbourg or Lyon for the trip they enable, not just the postcard.

Answer

A base should solve the days around it. Nice works because trains make the Riviera legible. Avignon can simplify Provence without a car. Bayeux is practical for Normandy history. Tours or Amboise can make the Loire manageable. Strasbourg gives Alsace rail ease; Lyon can anchor food and a southeast route. Smaller villages can be wonderful, but they ask more from transport and evening planning. The question is not where looks nicest at noon; it is where you will enjoy returning after a full day.
