These islands share white villages and bright Aegean water, but they do not create the same holiday.
Santorini
Choose Santorini for the caldera.
The first view across the flooded crater is genuinely different from anything on the other islands. Walk between Fira and Oia early, stay for the light changing across the cliffs and visit Akrotiri or a village away from the busiest sunset streets.
The drawbacks are price, crowds, steep paths and beaches that are interesting rather than easy. Santorini works best for a short romantic stay, photography and travellers who have always wanted to see the view.
Mykonos
Choose Mykonos for nightlife, luxury and a polished social scene.
Mykonos Town is beautiful in the morning, when the narrow streets are quiet and the harbour is beginning to wake. Later, restaurants, bars, beach clubs and shopping become the main event.
The island is expensive and can feel crowded. Choose it because that energy is what you want, not because it is expected on a first Greece trip.
Naxos
Choose Naxos for the best balance of town, beaches and inland life.
Chora has a harbour, old streets and the Portara above the water. Long sandy beaches run along the west coast. Inland, villages, farms and tavernas make the island feel larger than a beach resort.
Naxos suits families, first visits and stays of a week or more. A car is useful for the interior, but several beaches and the main town can be enjoyed without one.
Paros
Choose Paros for attractive towns and lively evenings.
Naoussa becomes busy around the harbour after dark, while Parikia is the more practical port town. Beaches and smaller villages are spread around the island.
Paros suits couples and groups of friends who want good restaurants and a social holiday without Mykonos prices. Naxos is usually better for families and travellers who want more inland variety.
Milos
Choose Milos for the coast.
Sarakiniko’s white rock is the best-known sight, but the island has many coves, fishing villages and beaches reached more easily by boat. A boat day is one of the main reasons to visit.
Milos suits couples, swimmers and photographers. It has less nightlife and no single town as lively as Paros or Naxos. A car or arranged transport makes the island much easier.
