Is two weeks enough for Indonesia?

Photo of a coastal landscape in Indonesia.

Yes. Two weeks is enough for two main regions. Java and Bali make the broadest first journey. Bali and Komodo combine an easy stay with several days on the water. Bali and Lombok work for a slower beach holiday. Trying to add three or four islands usually creates too many transfers.

Full answer

Two weeks is enough for a very good Indonesia trip.

It is not enough for every island that looks close on the map.

Yogyakarta, East Java and Bali

Allow three or four nights in Yogyakarta, two nights for one East Java volcano and six or seven nights in Bali.

This trip moves from temples and Javanese city life to a cold volcanic morning, then to Bali’s food, rituals and coast. It is varied, but the East Java section can be tiring.

Choose Bromo or Ijen rather than forcing both into a short schedule. If sleep and long road transfers are a concern, fly from Yogyakarta to Bali and leave the volcanoes out.

Bali and Komodo

Allow seven or eight nights in Bali and four or five nights around Labuan Bajo and the national park.

This is one of the simplest ways to see two very different parts of Indonesia. Bali is green, busy and full of choices. Komodo is dry, open and experienced largely from the water.

Leave time around the flights and boat. Do not arrive in Labuan Bajo late, take a dawn boat and fly out immediately after returning.

Bali and Lombok

Allow seven nights in Bali and five or six in one part of Lombok.

Use Bali for culture, food and one chosen coast. Use Lombok for south-coast surf, a quieter resort, Rinjani or one Gili island.

The trip becomes messy when mainland Lombok and several Gilis are added to multiple Bali hotels. Choose one or two bases on each island at most.

Yogyakarta and Komodo

Allow four or five nights in Yogyakarta and four or five around Labuan Bajo, with the remaining time for flights and a relaxed start or finish.

This route leaves Bali out and works well for travellers who want temples, food and natural scenery rather than a resort holiday.

Can three regions fit?

Yes, when the flights are straightforward and one region is kept short.

Yogyakarta, Bali and Komodo can work in two weeks. Skip the long East Java overland trip and use one or two Bali bases.

Java, Bali and Lombok also fit, but the trip will involve more packing and a ferry or flight. It is better with more than two weeks.

Families with young children

Use two regions and fewer hotels.

Yogyakarta and Bali work well. Ubud and Sanur can also fill most of a fortnight without another island. Bali and Komodo suit families only when the boat, sleeping arrangements and safety are appropriate.

A published flight or ferry time does not include the drive, waiting and hotel transfer. Count the whole day.

Keep one day flexible

Rain, sea conditions, volcanic activity and delays can change plans.

Leave room around the most important boat or flight. That spare day is more useful than another one-night stop.
