Is Bali worth visiting, or too crowded now?

Worshippers in the spring water at Tirta Empul in Bali.

Bali is still worth it, but the lazy version of Bali is often the worst one. Choose your base carefully, respect the traffic, leave room for quieter areas and do not expect one island to be one mood.

Answer

Bali is not ruined, but it is over-loved in the places where travellers keep asking it to be effortless. Canggu traffic, crowded viewpoints, beach clubs and identical café strips can make the island feel like a machine. That is not the whole story. Ubud still has inland texture if you avoid treating it as a photo course; Amed, Sidemen, Sanur, Uluwatu and quieter village stays can change the mood completely. The point is not to pretend Bali is untouched. The point is to choose the Bali you actually want and stop expecting a single base to deliver temples, surf, silence, food and perfect logistics.
