Are Bromo and Ijen worth the effort?
Bromo and Ijen can be extraordinary, but they are not casual sightseeing stops. Early starts, long transfers, weather, access rules and operator quality decide whether the volcano chapter feels thrilling or punishing.
Answer
Bromo and Ijen are not difficult because they lack payoff. They are difficult because the logistics are part of the experience. Bromo can deliver one of Java’s great dawn landscapes; Ijen can feel otherworldly when conditions, access and timing work. But both ask for tired bodies, dark starts, transport discipline and current checks. Do not add them because a photo looked easy. Add them if you are willing to shape the route around the volcano chapter and choose operators or transport carefully. For some travellers, one volcano done well is stronger than two squeezed into a punishment loop.
