Solo travel in Indonesia can be straightforward, especially on the main routes, but it is not a reason to become casual. The risks that matter most are often ordinary and preventable: riding a scooter without the right cover, taking a boat in poor conditions, underestimating surf or currents, choosing a tired late-night transfer, or letting a transport negotiation happen when you are hot and overloaded. Bali and Java are very different from remote islands or boat-heavy routes. Keep the easy parts easy, check current advice for the regions you choose and build margin into movement.
