The key is choosing one valley and staying there long enough. The mountains are not one compact park. Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Cortina, Val di Fassa and the western Dolomites have separate bus networks, lifts and access points.
Val Gardena
Val Gardena is the best place to start without a car.
Ortisei, Santa Cristina and Selva are connected by buses, and lifts rise directly from the towns to walking areas. Many hotels and guest cards include or support local transport, though the details change and should be checked before booking.
Ortisei has the most restaurants and the easiest town centre. Selva sits higher and closer to several lifts. Santa Cristina is quieter and lies between them.
From this valley, travellers can reach walks around Seceda, Alpe di Siusi and parts of the Sella area without needing to drive each morning.
Cortina d’Ampezzo
Cortina can be visited without a car, but the trip requires more care.
The town has buses to several trail areas and connections from Venice and nearby rail stations. Some famous walks are easy to reach in season; others require changes, limited services or a taxi.
Choose Cortina when the specific hikes and scenery around it are the priority. Do not assume it is a convenient base for the western Dolomites as well.
Reaching the mountains
Common gateways include Bolzano, Bressanone, Verona, Venice and Innsbruck, depending on the valley.
The final part of the journey is often by bus. Check the timetable for the exact season and day of the week. A connection that works in August may not run in October.
Keep the first and last days simple. Several changes with luggage can take longer than expected.
When a car-free trip works well
A car-free trip is a good choice when:
- you are happy to stay in one valley;
- the hotel is close to a bus stop or lift;
- the planned walks begin from places served by public transport;
- the trip is during the main summer or winter season;
- you do not need to visit several famous viewpoints on the same day.
When to rent a car
Rent a car when you want to move between distant valleys, stay in a remote farmhouse or visit trailheads with weak bus service.
A car is also useful in shoulder season, when lifts and buses may be reduced. Check closures before booking, as mountain seasons do not follow the same calendar as the cities.
A sensible first trip
Stay four or five nights in Ortisei, Santa Cristina or Selva. Choose two or three walks reached by local lift or bus, and keep one day flexible for weather.
The Dolomites do not need to be crossed from end to end. One valley can provide a week of walks, views and mountain huts without a car.
