Is Japan expensive to travel in?
Japan is not automatically cheap, but it can be more controllable than travellers expect. Transport, hotels, theme parks, restaurants and seasonality decide the budget more than the country’s reputation.

Japan can feel surprisingly reasonable in small daily ways — convenience-store breakfasts, casual meals, local trains, good-value business hotels outside peak dates. Then the bigger costs arrive: long-distance rail, central hotels, ryokan nights, theme parks, ski trips, taxis, luggage services and seasonal accommodation spikes. The budget depends less on whether Japan is “expensive” and more on what kind of Japan you are building. A Tokyo–Kansai city route can be managed carefully. A peak-season, ryokan-heavy, rail-hopping, theme-park-and-ski itinerary will not behave the same. Spend where the experience changes; do not let every efficient convenience become an automatic upgrade.
