Phnom Penh adds difficult but important history, while the coast offers rest if that is what the trip needs. Trying to combine Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, Kampot, the islands and a Thailand or Vietnam border link can make the country feel more tiring than it needs to. The best short routes leave at least one tempting piece out.
