How should travellers plan Durmitor and Tara Canyon?
Durmitor is worth the effort if mountains are part of why you came. Base around Žabljak, give the weather room, and do not treat Black Lake, Tara Canyon and mountain roads as a casual coastal add-on.

Durmitor is where Montenegro stops feeling like a compact coast-and-bay trip and starts feeling alpine. That is the appeal: colder air, dark lakes, high roads, canyons and a sense of distance that the coast does not give you. The trade-off is logistics. It is not the smoothest section for travellers without a car or a plan, and weather can matter more than enthusiasm. Give it nights, not scraps. If you only have time for a quick photo between coastal bases, choose Lovćen or Lake Skadar instead.
