Is Mexico City safe for travellers?

Mexico City is not one safety story. Many visitor areas are straightforward with normal city discipline, but taxis, nightlife, crowded transport, phone theft and unfamiliar neighbourhoods need attention.

Answer

Mexico City is a major capital, not a resort bubble. Many travellers have smooth visits by staying in well-chosen areas, using sensible transport, watching phones and bags, and keeping late-night decisions dull. The problems tend to cluster around predictable moments: tired arrivals, crowded places, nightlife, unfamiliar streets, and transport handoffs where money and bags are involved. That does not mean the city should be feared. It means the trip should be built with margins: a good base, current local advice, and enough Spanish or preparation to avoid improvising under pressure.
