Is Everest Base Camp worth it, or too crowded?

Forest or green landscape in Nepal.

Everest Base Camp is crowded and commercial in parts, but that does not make it empty. Go for the Khumbu journey, Namche, monasteries and high-mountain rhythm — not just the final signboard.

Answer

The best reason to trek to Everest Base Camp is not the base camp itself. It is the slow climb through the Khumbu, the discipline of acclimatisation, the first time the big peaks start filling the horizon, the tea-house rhythm and the feeling of getting somewhere by foot. The less satisfying version treats the trek as a race to a famous marker, then resents the crowds that fame created. EBC is not the right choice for travellers who want solitude or bargain simplicity. It can still be powerful for those who understand that the destination is a symbol and the route is the substance.
