It works best when you are already travelling between Christchurch and Marlborough, Nelson or the ferry route. It is less convincing when added from far away to a trip that really wants Aoraki/Mount Cook, Wānaka and Fiordland. Wildlife travel also asks for humility; weather, sea conditions and operator schedules can decide the day. Add Kaikōura when the coast and marine life are part of the route’s purpose, not as another famous name.
