Are Great Walks worth planning a trip around?
A Great Walk can absolutely justify planning around it, but it is not a last-minute add-on. Bookings, hut systems, weather windows and fitness matter as much as the scenery.

The Great Walks have earned their reputation because they turn New Zealand’s landscapes into journeys rather than viewpoints. That does not make them simple. The bureaucracy is part of the trip: bookings, huts or campsites, transport at either end, gear, food, weather, fitness and the possibility that conditions force a change. If a Great Walk is the reason you are coming, plan the rest of the itinerary around it and protect the days either side. If you only want one beautiful hike, there may be easier day-walk options with far less commitment. Do not squeeze a Great Walk into a route that has no slack.
