The Andaman coast and Gulf islands are not interchangeable beach options.
They look different, have different transport and do not share the same weather calendar.
The Andaman coast
Choose the Andaman side for Krabi’s limestone cliffs, Phuket’s range of hotels and flights, Koh Lanta’s slower beaches or boat trips toward smaller islands.
The main season is generally from November to April, when seas are often calmer and rainfall lower. December to February is the busiest period. May to October is wetter, and some boats or island services are reduced.
Phuket is the easiest for flights and services. The island is large, so choose the beach carefully. Patong is busy and nightlife-focused; Kata and Karon are more relaxed; northern areas are quieter but farther from restaurants and tours.
Krabi and Ao Nang suit travellers who want boat trips and the view of limestone cliffs rising from the water. Ao Nang is practical rather than beautiful in every part, but it is an easy base.
Koh Lanta suits families, couples and longer stays. The island feels slower than Phuket, though transport takes more effort and parts of it become very quiet outside the main season.
The Gulf
Choose the Gulf for Koh Samui’s resorts and direct flights, Koh Phangan’s mix of quiet beaches and nightlife, or Koh Tao’s diving.
The Gulf can have better conditions during parts of the Andaman wet season, particularly around Samui, Phangan and Tao. However, the wettest period for these islands often arrives later in the year, especially around October to December.
Koh Samui is the easiest island for families and travellers who want a wide choice of hotels, restaurants and medical services.
Koh Phangan changes completely by area. Some beaches are quiet and relaxed; others are shaped by parties and event dates. Check the location, not only the island name.
Koh Tao is best for diving and snorkelling. The journey takes longer, and the island is less suitable for a short beach break attached to a busy route.
Choose by the month first
Do not assume that “Thailand beach season” applies everywhere.
For a December or January trip, both sides may work, though the Andaman coast is often the safer general choice. In July and August, Samui and nearby Gulf islands may have better odds than Phuket or Krabi. In November, weather can be unsettled in the Gulf while the Andaman season is beginning.
Weather patterns vary from year to year. Check recent conditions, marine forecasts and ferry notices before travel.
