How do you plan a USA road trip that is not just too much driving?

Road or route scene in United States.

Count drive days as real days, not empty space between highlights. In the USA, the distance between “nearby” places can be the part that breaks the trip.

Answer

A good USA road trip has slack. It does not ask every day to include a long drive, a major sight, a hike, a sunset, dinner in a specific town and a cheerful early start the next morning. Distances are only part of the problem; parking, fuel, food stops, roadworks, mountain weather, desert heat and tired drivers all matter. Build the route around clusters rather than lines on a map. Two nights in a good base often beats one night in three places, because you get a real day instead of another packing ritual. The best road trips still feel free. If the plan leaves no room to stop when the light changes, it is probably too tight.
