Distances are long, shade is scarce, weather can turn quickly and the best lodging may not be where a budget map wants it to be. Las Vegas, Phoenix and Salt Lake City can all make sense as gateways depending on the loop, but the gateway is not the trip. The reward is in slower days: dawn light, short hikes done before the heat, canyon roads, empty stretches and evenings close to the park rather than hours away in traffic.
