How many days should first-time travellers spend in New York City?

Mountain or valley landscape in United States.

Give New York enough time to become a city, not a queue of icons. Four or five days is often more satisfying than three frantic days and a suitcase full of unused subway ambition.

Answer

New York can be brilliant in a short burst, but it rewards travellers who stop treating every hour as an appointment. The famous sights are part of it; the better memory may be a neighbourhood walk, a late slice, a park bench, a museum you did not rush and the moment the subway map starts making sense. Three days can work if the city is one stop in a larger trip. Four or five gives most first-timers a better balance of landmarks, food, wandering and recovery. More time is not wasted if you use it to live at street level rather than add another observation deck.
