Cairns or Port Douglas — which base is better for the reef and rainforest?

Cairns is the easier base, while Port Douglas gives you more of the tropical-holiday feel once you arrive.
Both work for the reef. The bigger difference is what happens around the reef day.
The airport is close to Cairns, there is a wide choice of tours and it is simple to organise several different days from the same hotel. That matters on a short trip, particularly when weather changes a boat day and you suddenly need another plan.
It is a city rather than a beach resort. The Esplanade and lagoon make the waterfront pleasant, but you do not stay in central Cairns because you want to walk out of the hotel onto a tropical swimming beach.
Port Douglas feels more like a holiday once you arrive.
The town is smaller, Four Mile Beach is part of everyday life and evenings are quieter. If you want some mornings around the hotel or beach rather than a tour every day, Port Douglas gives that time more value.
It also starts farther north. A Daintree day is still a proper outing, but less of the day is spent getting north from Cairns.
The trade-off comes at either end of the stay. Port Douglas means another road transfer after flying into Cairns, and travellers without a car rely more on shuttles, tour pickups or organised transport.
That is easy enough to accept on a longer stay. It matters more when you only have three nights.
Cairns also has an advantage when a trip needs flexibility: more services, more tour choice and easier airport access. For families, or anyone who likes having a backup when weather changes the plan, that can be more useful than the nicer setting.
Port Douglas wins when the quieter town, beach and slower hours between excursions are part of what you came to Queensland for.
