Whitsundays or Cairns — which Queensland reef/coast trip fits best?

Trees framing a hazy sandstone escarpment and forested valley in New South Wales.

Choose Cairns or Port Douglas for reef-and-rainforest depth; choose the Whitsundays for island scenery, sailing and a more holiday-polished coast. Both can be good, but they are not the same Queensland.

Answer

Cairns and Port Douglas are stronger when the reef and Daintree are the point. The Whitsundays are stronger when you want island views, boat days, Airlie Beach energy or resort-style coast. The mistake is adding both because they sit under the Queensland label. In a short Australia route, one tropical leg done well usually feels better than two rushed transfers with similar expectations placed on very different places.
