Switzerland is one of the rare countries where the easy answer is often the train. Major cities, lake towns and alpine gateways connect cleanly, and many mountain villages are car-free or easier by public transport anyway. A car can still make sense for rural valleys, luggage-heavy family travel, photography stops or a wider road trip through neighbouring countries. But it is not a magic freedom card. Parking costs, one-way fees, traffic around cities and winter conditions can turn the rental into a burden. For a first trip built around Zurich, Lucerne, the Bernese Oberland and Zermatt, start with rail unless you have a specific reason not to.
