Where should travellers base themselves in the Bernese Oberland?

With only three or four nights, the sensible plan is to unpack once. The distances look small, but moving between mountain villages often means trains, lifts and a final walk uphill with bags. Changing hotels can cost a good part of a day without giving you a much better holiday. Interlaken is useful when you're arriving late, moving on to another Swiss region or want lakes and towns alongside the mountains. For a trip mainly about the Jungfrau scenery, staying in Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, Mürren or Grindelwald usually puts more of the holiday outside your front door. Even with five or six nights, one base can be enough. A second stay only begins to make sense when several days are devoted to a different area, not simply because another village has a beautiful view. Moving from Wengen to Mürren just to sleep on the other side of the valley is hard to justify: both can be visited from one base, provided you allow for the connections. The hotel address matters almost as much as the village name. Check the walk from the station, hills or steps, evening food nearby and the journey back from the places you most want to see.
