Add one scenic region carefully, not every beautiful place in the algorithm. Guilin/Yangshuo, Zhangjiajie, Huangshan, Jiuzhaigou and Yunnan can each justify time; together they can destroy a short itinerary.

China’s scenic regions are genuinely tempting, and that is exactly the problem. Each one has its own transport logic, weather risk, ticketing, crowds and physical effort. A first trip that already includes Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai usually has room for one major scenic shift, not a scenic greatest-hits album. Choose the landscape that best changes the trip: karst rivers, high mountains, colourful lakes, Yunnan highlands or dramatic park views. The practical implication is simple: make the detour important enough to deserve time, or leave it for another trip.
