Is ten days enough for Athens and the islands?

Open shoreline and coastal water in Greece.

Yes. Spend two or three nights in Athens and six or seven nights on one island. Two islands can fit when they connect directly, but each will receive only three or four nights. For most first visitors, Athens and one island is the better use of ten days.

Full answer

Ten days is enough for Athens and the islands if the island plan stays simple.

The best use of the time is two or three nights in Athens and the rest on one island.

Athens and one island

This route suits most first visitors.

Spend three nights in Athens and six nights on Naxos, Paros, Milos or another island. Santorini can work with four or five nights if the caldera is the main reason for going.

With one island, there is time to settle into the hotel, find a favourite beach and explore beyond the port town. A windy or rainy day does not remove half of the stay.

For most first visits, Naxos is the easiest island to recommend. It has long beaches, a lively main town and villages inland. Choose Milos for boat trips and an unusual coast, Paros for busier evenings, or Santorini when the caldera view matters enough to accept the prices and crowds.

Athens and two islands

Two islands can fit when they are close and directly connected.

A possible route is:

  • two nights in Athens;
  • three nights on Santorini;
  • four nights on Naxos;
  • the final night in Athens or near the departure airport if needed.

Paros and Naxos are another easy pairing. Milos can be combined with Santorini when the ferry schedule works.

The drawback is that every ferry uses more than the crossing time. There is checkout, travel to the port, waiting, the ferry and another transfer after arrival.

Do not build the route around a tight final connection

Ferries can be delayed or cancelled by weather.

Return to Athens the day before an important international flight, or use a through-ticketed domestic flight with enough time. Do not assume a summer ferry will run at the same time or frequency in spring and autumn.

Crete in ten days

Athens and one part of Crete work well.

Spend two or three nights in Athens and the rest around Chania, Rethymno or another part of the island. Do not try to cross all of Crete. Choose one area and use a car or carefully selected day trips.

What to leave out

Do not add three Cycladic islands to a ten-day trip. The route may be possible, but much of the holiday will revolve around ferries and hotel changes.

Do not add Mykonos only because it is close to another island. Choose it for its nightlife and style, or use the days somewhere that suits you better.

Ten days is enough. One island lets you enjoy it rather than simply arrive and leave.
