Should travellers fly or take ferries between Greek islands?

Open shoreline and coastal water in Greece.

Ferries are part of Greece, but they are not always the smartest answer. Use ferries where the route is clean, fly where a long connection would eat the trip, and stop counting transfer days as beach days.

Answer

A ferry can be one of the pleasures of Greece: sea, wind, islands appearing slowly on the horizon. It can also be a long, exposed, schedule-sensitive way to move between places that are not as close as they look. Flights are not a failure when they save a route, especially between Athens and larger islands or when a ferry chain would wreck a short trip. Check current schedules before committing, then choose the mode that gives the holiday back more usable time. The romantic option is not romantic if it steals the best day of the stay.
