Crete is big enough to be its own trip. Treat it as a quick add-on and you will mostly remember roads; give it time and you get beaches, food, gorges, ruins and towns with a rhythm of their own.

Crete punishes checklist thinking more than many travellers expect. Chania, Heraklion, Rethymno, Knossos, western beaches, mountain villages and the south coast do not sit neatly beside one another for a two-night sampling stop. The island works when you choose a side, accept the driving map and let the days have shape. It can pair with Athens, or even replace a Cyclades-hopping plan for travellers who want one bigger base with variety. What does not work well is squeezing Crete in because it looks like “one more island” beside the rest of Greece.
