Chania or Heraklion: where should travellers base in Crete?
Chania is usually the softer base for old-town atmosphere and western beaches; Heraklion is more practical for Knossos, arrivals and eastern routes. The right answer depends less on prestige and more on your daily driving map.

Chania tends to win the romance contest: harbour evenings, lanes, restaurants and access to many of the west’s best-known beach and gorge days. Heraklion is less obviously pretty, but it is practical, especially for Knossos, museums, flights, ferries and routes heading east or central. The mistake is choosing the more charming name and then spending the trip driving too far every day. On Crete, base choice should follow the actual sights, beaches and roads you plan to use. For a short stay, one well-chosen base beats splitting nights just to feel comprehensive.
