Is Komodo and Flores worth the extra travel time?

Rugged island bays from a high viewpoint at Padar Island.

Komodo and Flores can be worth the effort when wildlife, boat days and eastern Indonesian landscapes are the point. They are poor last-minute add-ons to an already full Bali itinerary.

Answer

Komodo and Flores are where Indonesia starts to feel much larger than a Bali holiday. The payoff can be huge: marine colour, dry islands, boat days, wildlife and a sense of travelling into a different part of the country. The catch is that the logistics are not decorative. Flights, boat operators, park rules, weather, sea conditions and costs all shape the experience. Add Komodo or Flores when this eastern chapter is one of the reasons you are going to Indonesia. Do not tack it on because there are two spare nights and a photo of a dragon looked persuasive.
