Is Hampi worth the detour?

Photo of a mountain or valley landscape in India.

Hampi is worth it for travellers who want boulder landscapes, ruins and a slower inland stop. It is less rewarding when squeezed into a route that already has too many long transfers.

Answer

Hampi is one of those places where the setting does half the work: boulders, temples, ruins, river light and wide spaces that feel very different from India’s major cities. But it is not always easy to slot in. The journey can be awkward, heat matters and the site deserves more than a rushed overnight. Add Hampi if South India’s inland history and landscape are part of the trip’s point. Skip it if you are only chasing another famous name between Kerala, Goa and flights.
