Should travellers add Ladakh, Himachal or Uttarakhand to a first India trip?
The Indian Himalayas can be extraordinary, but they deserve their own time. Ladakh, Himachal and Uttarakhand are not casual add-ons to Delhi, Agra and Jaipur; roads, altitude and weather decide the route.
Answer
India’s mountains can feel like a different country inside the country: high passes, monastery roads, hill towns, pilgrimage routes, pine valleys and travel days that do not care what your flight schedule says. Ladakh needs altitude planning and access checks. Himachal can be more social and road-linked, but still slow. Uttarakhand can be spiritual, scenic and logistically uneven. Add the Himalayas when they are central to the trip, not when you are trying to improve a packed north India itinerary with a quick mountain escape.
