How should travellers think about altitude and mountain travel in India?
Altitude is not something to bluff through because the views are good. Build in acclimatisation, avoid heroic road days and check current conditions before treating any Himalayan route as fixed.
Answer
India’s mountain regions can be breathtaking and unforgiving in the same breath. A traveller who feels confident in cities or deserts may still struggle at altitude, on narrow roads or in weather that changes a valley quickly. The practical answer is margin: climb gradually where possible, sleep lower when advised, know symptoms, avoid alcohol-fuelled bravado and make sure insurance and emergency assumptions are real. Drivers, guides and local advice matter more in the mountains than a saved map pin. The best mountain trip is the one you do not have to force.
