Should you add Kyushu or Okinawa to a Japan itinerary?
Kyushu and Okinawa are worth it when they become a proper southern chapter. Add them for food, onsen, volcanoes, islands or beaches — not because a short golden-route trip has one blank night.
Answer
Kyushu and Okinawa are not interchangeable southern extras. Kyushu can give volcanic landscapes, onsen towns, regional food and a warmer, more spacious route than the Tokyo–Kansai spine. Okinawa is a different island trip altogether, shaped by weather, beaches, history, flights and ferry logic. Both can be excellent, but both need time. Add either when you are ready to cut something else or when the south is the main purpose of the trip. If you try to attach them casually to Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, the cost is not just money; it is the disappearance of slower days.
