Is Hokkaido worth adding to a first Japan trip?

Forest or green landscape in Japan.

Hokkaido is worth it when nature, snow, food or wide-open road-trip space are the point. It is less convincing as a rushed bolt-on to Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.

Answer

Hokkaido is Japan, but it does not behave like a small northern footnote to the golden route. It has bigger distances, harsher weather, strong seasonal appeal, excellent food and a very different landscape rhythm. In winter, snow and ski logistics can justify the whole trip. In warmer months, flowers, coasts, national parks and road-trip space become the appeal. The catch is time. Sapporo alone can be an easy add-on, but the Hokkaido travellers imagine usually requires more movement, more weather margin and sometimes a car. Add it when the north is a priority, not when the first itinerary is already straining.
