Use buses where they are strong, fly when distance starts stealing the trip, and rent a car only when it unlocks the region. Mexico punishes one transport rule applied to the whole country.

Mexico’s transport logic changes by region. Comfortable long-distance buses can be excellent on some southern and peninsula routes. Domestic flights make sense when the alternative is a full day or more of movement. Rental cars can be useful in places like parts of the Yucatán or Baja, but much less appealing in big cities or routes with safety and insurance concerns. Colectivos and taxis fill gaps, but they require more local confidence. Start with the route, then choose the transport. Do not decide you are “doing Mexico by bus” or “renting a car for freedom” before the geography has had a say.
