Long-distance buses can be one of Mexico’s better travel tools, especially in the south and Yucatán. But they still cost time and energy, so do not make every good day depend on arriving fresh after a long ride.

Mexico’s better intercity buses can be comfortable enough that travellers underestimate the planning cost. A direct bus between well-linked cities can be the right choice, especially when airports add transfers and expense. But a route made of constant long bus rides is still a route built around fatigue. Night buses may save a hotel night, but they can also steal the next day. Use buses where they simplify the trip: Mexico City to nearby cities, Oaxaca connections where sensible, Yucatán town links, and routes where the station-to-station logic is clean. Fly or cut the route when the bus becomes the holiday.
