Should you trek Nepal in winter or monsoon?
Winter and monsoon trekking can work in the right places, but they are not just cheaper versions of peak season. Visibility, snow, leeches, landslides, cold nights and route access can change the whole trip.
Answer
Off-season Nepal can be rewarding when the route is chosen for the season rather than in spite of it. Winter may bring clearer skies and quieter trails at lower or mid-altitudes, but higher passes and cold nights change the risk profile. Monsoon can make some landscapes lush and atmospheric, but rain, cloud, leeches, landslides and transport disruption can become the trip’s main character. The point is not to scare travellers away from winter or monsoon. It is to stop them treating a peak-season itinerary as if it simply needs a different jacket. Off-season trekking needs more route discipline, current conditions and tolerance for plans changing.
