Wellington works when you are moving toward the ferry or want a strong city break. Northland and the Coromandel are slower coastal trips that deserve space rather than being stapled onto a route already heading south. The North Island is not short on reasons to go; it is easy to weaken by treating every attraction as a quick stop between Auckland and Wellington. Give it a spine, and it becomes far more convincing.
