Is Auckland worth time, or just an arrival city?
Auckland is worth a soft landing, good food and harbour time, but it rarely needs to dominate a first New Zealand trip. Use it to recover, orient and choose one nearby escape, then move on.
Answer
Auckland is at its best when you stop asking it to compete with fiords and glaciers. It is a practical arrival city with harbour views, neighbourhood food, island escapes and enough urban ease to make the first day less brutal. That does not mean it needs four precious nights on a short itinerary. Spend enough time to arrive properly, eat well and understand that New Zealand is not only scenery, then decide whether you want a nearby island, west-coast beach or simply a clean exit toward Rotorua or Northland. Auckland is not a mistake. Overweighting it on a scenery-led trip can be.
