Serbia is not a place where every visitor needs fluent Serbian, but a few words and a little preparation go a long way. In Belgrade and Novi Sad, many accommodation, restaurant and younger service interactions are manageable in English. Outside the main visitor path, or in bus stations, markets, older family-run places and smaller towns, the comfort level can drop. This is not a crisis. It just means having addresses saved, using translation tools respectfully, learning basic greetings and not assuming everyone’s job is to switch languages for you. The reward is a smoother, warmer trip with fewer awkward little stalls.
