How many days should you spend in Hanoi?
Give Hanoi at least two full city days; three is the better default for a first visit. Two days is enough to get beyond a stopover, while three leaves room to eat well, explore the history and spend time in different neighbourhoods. How many full days do you need in Hanoi?
For most first-time travellers, plan on at least two full city days. Three is the better default, while four suits a slower stay. Hanoi can feel like noise and traffic on arrival, then become much easier to read once you have time to eat well, explore its history and watch ordinary street life without another bus to catch.
A full usable day starts after breakfast and runs through the evening without an airport transfer, intercity move or side trip taking a large part of it. Nights are not a reliable measure: a late-arrival night adds accommodation, not a Hanoi day.

When two days is enough
Two full days is enough when the wider trip is tight, your priorities lie in northern landscapes rather than extra city time, or you want a taste of Hanoi rather than a slower urban stay. Two days works best when both are fully usable city days, not fragments placed around an overnight bus, cruise transfer or early flight.
When a fourth day earns its place
Extend to four when you know what the extra day is for: recovering from long-haul travel, lingering over food and cafés, visiting more museums and historical sites, photographing the city at a slower pace, or simply avoiding another day of packing and moving on. Four days is not automatically better. It works when you genuinely want more city time or need time to recover, not because the city needs another list of sights.
Arrival, departure and stopover days
Do not count a late arrival as the first Hanoi day. The airport transfer, immigration, baggage, traffic and hotel check-in can consume a large part of the arrival day. An early flight or intercity departure can also take away most of a usable day.
After a long-haul arrival, add a night rather than counting the arrival day as a full one. A single full day can still make a worthwhile stopover if the hotel is central and there is no same-evening bus to catch, but it is a sample of Hanoi rather than the recommended first stay.
Side trips do not count as Hanoi city days
Ninh Binh is close enough to visit from Hanoi, but a day trip still uses almost the whole day and an overnight is often the better version. Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba also involve substantial transfer or cruise time. Count each of these separately.
A booking of four Hanoi nights with one full Ninh Binh day trip may provide only two or three usable Hanoi city days, depending on arrival and departure timing. Count usable city days, not nights booked in a Hanoi hotel.
