For a first trip of about two weeks, combine Hanoi, one northern landscape and central Vietnam. A good route is Hanoi, Ninh Binh or Ha Long Bay, then Hue and Hoi An. Add Ho Chi Minh City only if you are comfortable flying and moving at a faster pace. With three weeks, the whole country becomes much easier.

If this is your first time in Vietnam, you can stay entirely in the north and still have a varied trip. With 5–6 days, spend time in Hanoi and add one place such as Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay or Sapa. With a week, two stops can work. Trying to fit Ninh Binh, the bay and the mountains into the same short trip usually means too much time on the road.

Two days is enough to get beyond a stopover, while three leaves room to eat well, explore the history and spend time in different neighbourhoods.
