Ho Chi Minh City is big, hot, busy and more modern in feel than many first-timers expect. That does not make it skippable. It is one of the best places to understand Vietnam’s southern rhythm: cafe culture, markets, museums, rooftop evenings, motorbike flow and the gateway logic for the Mekong or onward flights. But it can also exhaust travellers who arrive expecting old-town charm. Two or three nights often works well; more makes sense if you like cities or need a practical reset. The key is not to judge all of Vietnam by your first traffic-heavy afternoon in Saigon.
