Is Lucerne a good base for a first Switzerland trip?

Yes. Lucerne is one of Switzerland’s easiest first bases because it gives lake atmosphere, old-town texture and quick access to mountain days without forcing you straight into the deep Alps.

Answer

Lucerne works because it does several jobs at once. It is attractive without requiring much effort, compact enough for a soft landing, and close to lake-and-mountain excursions that give a first taste of Swiss scenery before the bigger alpine decisions begin. It is also easier to enjoy in imperfect weather than a pure mountain base, because the town itself has enough texture. The catch is that Lucerne should not become a substitute for the Bernese Oberland or Zermatt if those are the real reasons for the trip. Use it as a hinge: a few relaxed days of water, old streets and mountain access, then move on before convenience becomes inertia.
