Is two weeks enough for China?

Photo of architectural detail in China.

Yes. Two weeks is enough for Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai plus one small addition. It is also enough for a focused trip through Yunnan, Sichuan or eastern China. It is not enough for several distant regions, even with high-speed trains and domestic flights.

Full answer

Two weeks is enough for a memorable first trip to China.

It is not enough for Beijing, Xi’an, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guilin, Zhangjiajie and Yunnan.

The transport exists. The time does not.

The classic first trip

Spend four or five nights in Beijing, two or three in Xi’an and three or four in Shanghai.

This route moves from imperial sites and the Great Wall to an older capital, then to a modern coastal city. Each stop feels different, and the high-speed railway follows a sensible direction.

Use the remaining days for one nearby or well-connected addition.

Hangzhou or Suzhou can be added from Shanghai. Chengdu works when flights or trains line up well. Guilin and Yangshuo need at least three nights. Another option is to keep the route to the three cities and use the extra days for slower mornings and day trips.

A regional trip can be better

Travellers with a strong interest in one region do not need to complete the classic route first.

Yunnan can fill the whole fortnight. Kunming, Dali and Lijiang are the usual starting points, with one higher or more remote area if travel time and altitude allow.

Sichuan and Chongqing offer food, tea houses, enormous cities and mountain or rural additions.

Shanghai and eastern China can include Hangzhou, Suzhou, Nanjing and Huangshan without crossing the country.

Beijing and northern China suit travellers who want more history, the Great Wall and a slower city stay.

Count the days lost to each move

A train may take four hours, but the day also includes packing, travel to the station, security, waiting and another journey to the hotel.

A domestic flight can take most of a day too. Chinese cities have several airports and stations, some far from the centre.

With two weeks, stop at no more than four main bases. Five begins to feel hurried.

What does not fit well

Do not combine the eastern cities with both Yunnan and a mountain park.

Do not add Zhangjiajie for one night. Do not fly to Guilin and leave the morning after a single boat trip. Do not use every remaining night for another city simply because the booking site shows a connection.

Leave room for the first day

After a long international flight, keep the first afternoon or evening simple. Reach the hotel, eat nearby and sleep.

The arrival day is a poor time for a timed museum ticket, a difficult station transfer or an app you have not tested.

Two weeks works well when the route accepts that much of China will remain for later.
