When should travellers fly instead of taking trains in China?
Trains are often the better China experience, but flights make sense when the route jumps between distant regions such as Sichuan, Yunnan or far scenic areas. The goal is not railway purity; it is protecting the trip.
Answer
The train is often the calmer and more interesting choice between major cities, especially on the classic route. But China is large enough that some jumps start stealing days. Flying can make sense when you are linking Beijing or Shanghai with Chengdu, Yunnan, far southern regions or time-sensitive scenic areas. The trade-off is airport distance, security, delays and less sense of the country between stops. Use rail where it supports the route’s rhythm; fly when distance is becoming the hidden cost of the holiday.
