Is Mumbai worth visiting, or just a gateway?

Urban travel scene in India.

Mumbai is worth time if you like cities, food, sea air and daily-life energy. It is not an easy decompression stop, but skipping it can mean missing one of India’s most distinctive urban rhythms.

Answer

Mumbai is not a polished introduction, and it rarely behaves like a simple sightseeing city. Its appeal is in movement: local trains, sea-facing promenades, markets, old colonial buildings, street food, film-city mythology and neighbourhoods that feel compressed and alive. It can be tiring, humid and expensive by India standards, so do not add it lazily. But if your route already passes through, a couple of focused days can give a very different urban India from Delhi or Jaipur. Use it for food, walking, history and atmosphere rather than a neat hit list.
