Chiapas appeals to travellers who want Mexico to feel less polished and more geographically layered: San Cristóbal, indigenous highland culture, waterfalls, jungle ruins and long road days that do not always behave neatly. That is also the catch. Transport can be slower, safety conditions can be more localised, and a route that looks like a small detour can become the spine of a trip. Chiapas is worth considering when you have enough days to treat it seriously. It is less convincing when bolted onto a packed CDMX, Oaxaca and Yucatán itinerary as one more badge.
