Mexico can be good value, but the cheap version is not universal. Resorts, Tulum-style beach towns, domestic flights, car rental, tours and safety-conscious transport can make the real trip cost higher than the headline suggests.

The budget-friendly Mexico people imagine is real in some places and much less real in others. Mexico City can offer excellent value for food and culture, but accommodation and transport choices still matter. Oaxaca can be reasonable until festival periods, boutique expectations or coast transfers enter. The Riviera Maya can become expensive quickly, especially around beach access, taxis, tours and resort-style stays. The practical move is to budget by route style, not by country reputation. If safety-conscious transfers, domestic flights, good accommodation and paid activities matter to you, include them from the start rather than pretending they are optional extras.
